Sustainable renovation of precarious housing in Phnom Penh

Renovating substandard housing to provide safe, healthy, and dignified living conditions for the most vulnerable populations of Phnom Penh. This initiative responds to the rapid urban and demographic growth of the Cambodian capital, which has led to a sharp increase in precarious housing, now affecting around 25% of the population.
Special attention is given to women and children, who are more exposed to health risks, insecurity, and social exclusion.

Two Artelia volunteers traveled to the field to provide technical support to the project team. Their involvement focused on exploring, alongside local partners, more sustainable and climate-resilient design and construction solutions.
Thanks to their expertise, the environmental and social dimensions of the project were strengthened from the design phase, ensuring greater long-term sustainability of the actions undertaken.

My first steps in Asia, alongside Planète, Enfants & Développement, were a truly memorable experience—both professionally and personally.
Integrated into a Franco-Khmer team, I discovered the development challenges in Cambodia and was able to apply my skills in tropical bioclimatic design, developed notably in La Réunion.
Despite very different contexts, certain parallels allowed us to consider appropriate solutions, especially regarding natural ventilation.
These rich exchanges around local construction practices were particularly instructive.
I remain deeply moved by this human adventure and by the people I met.

– Thank you for everything!
