Access to safe housing and education in the slums of Nairobi

Providing the most vulnerable with access to safe housing and an education in the slums of Nairobi and improving the implementation of slum upgrading projects through pilot projects to build decent collective and cooperative housing, improve drainage (sanitation) systems and access to clean water, and manage solid waste.

Two Artelia volunteers completed an assignment to help improve the drainage and sanitation systems and develop solid waste management. They provided technical support, training sessions and feasibility studies in order to advise on technical aspects of stormwater and wastewater collection and management, and to propose technical solutions for managing and recovering the solid waste collected and sorted by young inhabitants.

“A memorable experience at the heart of the Kibera and Mathare slums, where water and waste are pressing, inter-related issues. I'm keen to follow the progress of this project headed by PADEM.”

“My stay in Nairobi was rewarding both personally and professionally. The issues faced by the city’s slums are huge, but we hope our on-site assignment will help to improve things for the people living in Mathare et Kibera!”
