Aid for the victims of Cyclone Gezani
In February 2026, Cyclone Gezani struck the Toamasina region of Madagascar with devastating force, causing widespread destruction – with up to 90 per cent of homes destroyed in the worst-affected areas – and plunging thousands of families into a humanitarian emergency.
The Artelia Foundation has drawn on its emergency fund to support GRET’s response to the affected communities. Thanks to its long-standing presence in the region and its expertise in the fields of water, sanitation and food security, the organisation was able to rapidly deploy an emergency response tailored to the most critical needs.
GRET’s efforts focused on improving the nutritional and health situation of the affected communities. More than 9 tonnes of fortified flour were distributed to over 5,000 beneficiaries to help prevent malnutrition. At the same time, 14,000 bars of soap and hygiene kits were handed out to affected families to minimise the health risks associated with the disaster.
In the area of water and sanitation, the organisation emptied more than 70 communal toilets to reduce the risk of contamination and epidemics. The response then continued with hygiene and nutrition awareness campaigns, support for schools, and the installation of a solar-powered water pump to sustainably improve communities’ access to water.
