Aid for victims of typhoons and floods in the Philippines and Sri Lanka

In the wake of Typhoons Uwan and Tino in the Philippines and Cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka, thousands of people were left without access to safe drinking water and essential sanitation facilities. Flooding, landslides and strong winds have damaged numerous water networks, schools and community facilities, exacerbating the vulnerability of populations already affected by the disasters.

The Artelia Foundation has drawn on its emergency fund to support ACTED’s relief efforts in the Philippines and Sri Lanka. Thanks to its long-standing presence in both countries, the NGO has been able to swiftly roll out initiatives aimed at restoring access to water, hygiene and sanitation for affected communities.

In the Philippines, ACTED carried out operations in the municipality of Dinapigue, which was severely affected by Typhoon Uwan. The organisation conducted a needs assessment before rehabilitating the water supply system at Dinapigue National High School, installing a motorised pump and reinforced equipment to withstand future extreme weather events. More than 620 pupils and 38 staff members now have sustainable access to safe drinking water. The NGO also organised hygiene awareness campaigns and trained the school’s staff in infrastructure maintenance to ensure its long-term sustainability.

In Sri Lanka, efforts focused on rehabilitating several community water networks damaged by Cyclone Ditwah, as well as restoring school sanitation facilities. This work has restored reliable access to safe drinking water for more than 4,700 people and improved hygiene conditions for nearly 800 pupils, teachers and staff at a school.

Thanks to this effort, thousands of people have regained access to essential services and now benefit from infrastructure that is more resilient to climate-related hazards.
