Sustainably improving access to healthcare in remote areas of Senegal
Improving access to healthcare in several remote areas of Senegal through the development and strengthening of healthcare infrastructure tailored to the needs of local communities. In particular, the project aims to improve the provision of local healthcare services and to strengthen the resilience of healthcare facilities in the face of extreme weather events.
An Artelia employee travelled to Fongolimbi, in Senegal, to support the commissioning of a new health centre built by the NGO Aide Médicale et Développement. He provided his technical expertise during the handover of the facility to the local teams, whilst also helping to assess future needs for healthcare infrastructure. This mission identified several areas for improvement, particularly regarding the refurbishment and reinforcement of healthcare facilities at risk of flooding, with a view to ensuring sustainable access to healthcare in the region.
This mission marked the culmination of a project that began in June 2024 with an assessment visit. It was a real challenge, where it was essential to adapt to local techniques and practices in order to build, in a sustainable manner, a facility for which there was a desperate need. This mission also provided an opportunity for inspiring encounters, characterised by generosity and determination, despite particularly complex local health circumstances.
