Assessment of roofs of PSE centres
The tropical climate takes a heavy toll on the roofs of the school buildings run by PSE-Pour un Sourire d'Enfant in Cambodia, causing them to deteriorate rapidly and resulting in widespread leaks.
Roof assessments were carried out on the three campuses in order to identify dilapidated installations and areas affected by leaks. Artelia’s volunteers recommended technical solutions and a programme of works, and drew up an estimate of the project costs.
The Khmer are really kind, and gave us a warm welcome. The children and families we met made a deep impression on me. Although they live in poverty, they seem happier and more respectful than we tend to be. Their attitude to their buildings can be summed up as, “as long as it holds it will do”. That’s quite different to the approach we are accustomed to. And it’s probably the most difficult aspect of our assignment, because many of the technical solutions that would have been suitable couldn’t be implemented for the simple reason that they wouldn’t have been executed correctly. I enjoyed my stay and my experience of campus life, and hope our small contribution will be of use to the heroes who keep PSE running.
