Emergency financial support for victims of disasters in Morocco and Libya

Aid for victims of the earthquake in Morocco

Following the earthquake that hit Morocco on 8 September, the provisional toll published on 12 September 2023 by the Ministry of the Interior was 2,901 dead and 5,530 injured. Most of the victims were in the provinces of Al Haouz and Taroudant. The quakes caused extensive damage and the collapse of many buildings in these regions.A €10,000 grant has been awarded to the Moroccan Red Crescent to provide humanitarian aid to the local population (distribution of water, food, medical supplies and access to shelters) on the recommendation of Artelia's teams in Morocco. With the same objective in mind, a grant of €5,000 has also been awarded to our partner AFEMAC to finance the aid provided directly to the victims in Chichaoua and the surrounding area.

Aid for victims of major flooding in Libya

On the night of 10 to 11 September, storm Daniel hit the eastern coast of Libya in Cyrenaica, causing flooding on an unprecedented scale. The city of Derna was severely affected: entire districts were devastated, forcing more than 30,000 people to move, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Two dilapidated dams located upstream of the city broke during the storm: according to the UN, the human toll is 11,300 dead and 10,100 missing. The humanitarian crisis is all the greater because Libya, divided into two distinct political entities, is undergoing a political and security crisis that is complicating humanitarian aid. A €10,000 grant has been awarded to the Libyan Red Crescent to help deliver medicines, foodstuffs and essential items to survivors. In the longer term, the Artelia Foundation will continue to work with non-profit organisations providing support to the victims of these disasters.
