Protecting the village from flooding by restoring the protective embankment
As part of an on-site assignment, two volunteers helped the organisation find a development solution with a view to reinforcing the embankment, combatting backward erosion, and channelling flood flows away from the structure in order to limit risks of flooding in the village. They also provided advice on the issue of access to water.
Our assignment will - we hope - ensure that the village is better equipped to cope with river floods in the future. Our challenge was to adapt to the local context, to make sure the solutions we recommended were realistic and durable. Beyond the technical aspects, this was a very rewarding experience in both human and cultural terms: immersion in family life, meeting and sharing with the local inhabitants, eating typical dishes prepared with vegetables from the women’s garden, and drinking their delicious bissap...
